Mounting a Renishaw Toolsetter to a Fixture Plate

A question we're frequently asked is "If I'm covering my entire table with a fixture plate, where can I mount my toolsetter?"

The good news is that mounting your OTS probe on top of a fixture plate is perfectly acceptable and even offers some additional flexibility as the probe can be affixed to any of the plate's fixturing holes.

Removing the WIPS from your table is surprisingly simple. The probe body disconnects from the probe base (2 in the below photo) using small set screws (1) around the base. This reveals a single bolt (3) which passes through the probe base and into a t-nut in the table.

To install your OTS on a fixture plate:

  1. Remove the probe body from the probe base (2) by loosening the set screws (1).
  2. Remove the probe base mounting bolt (3) and the t-nut below.
  3. Install your fixture plate(s).
  4. Place the probe base (2) over the fixturing hole in the location you'd like to mount your toolsetter.
  5. Install and tighten the base mounting bolt (3) to the fixture plate. If the bolt provided is longer than 7/8" you will need to exchange it for a 7/8" or shorter 1/2"-13 bolt to avoid driving the bolt into your table.
  6. Re-install the probe body onto the probe base (2).
  7. Follow any instructions from your machine's manufacturer for any calibration and alignment of the toolsetter (Haas instructions available here).
