I have a 1200lbs "desktop" Ganty cnc with full cast iron frame. The machine is extremely rigid for its size but it lacks Z axis clearance below the gantry I only have 200mm between the bed and the bottom of the gantry. Most parts I work on fit in there even cylinder heads for combustion chamber work. As soon as I put a standard type cnc vice there half of my real-estate is gone. The low profile mod vice is just amazing at workholding without sacrificing the little clearance I have to work with.

Put off buying a plate and vise setup for some time. Not even one month into owning it I had to mill .080” off of this brake caliper to get it to align with the disc. The vise held the caliper securely even though the clamping areas aren’t parallel. It is something I don’t think the vise was designed to do but did better than anything else I have and did it very securely.

Made my own Saunders fixture plate, with nothing less than 390 M12 holes with reamed holes for 12.72mm in the first 7.5mm and threads all the way through. Made room for my fourth axis for permanent mount and so on. Turned out beautiful. Vise sits nicely and can be repositioned anywhere on the fixture plate. The plugs also fit perfectly in all the holes.

I ordered the 1/2" modular vise system along with a set of soft jaws. I received the order only to discover the soft jaws were missing. I contacted the folks at Saunders and they shipped out a replacement set right away.
The quality of the of the vise is great. The surface finish and machining look to be very well done. I am extremely happy with the purchase.

Wow folks, thank you! As a small business owner I chose very late in my career to give a small CNC machine a try after years of only having done basic manual machining most of my life. We use this machine for prototype and very low production runs as well as one off parts, and for that reason it is hard to predict what we will run next. I am really happy with the vice. I originally purchased the single station and I should have bought the Dual kit. Saunders really helped me out and assisted me with the upgrade items I required. Shipping is expensive to Australia so if your on the fence, buy the duel kit you will not regret it.
This really allowed me to start machining better parts without fear of crashing into a vice or items on the table.

Used on my homemade CNC machine using a homemade 1/2" fixture plate. While the genuine SMW fixture plates I've bought for work are certainly a nicer experience of using this system, I am bootstrapping my home shop and using a homemade fixture plate is an acceptable solution as long as it is rigid enough. You'll want to eventually upgrade to a steel fixture plate because it just takes the wear and tear of frequent setups better, but the real value is in the mod vises IMHO. Extremely clever, and takes a lot of head-scratching out of job setup work.

I have an old VF4 that I equipped with two Pierson pallets. I machined two plates with Pierson features on the bottom and Saunders pin/bolt pattern on the top. It's proving to be very versatile, accurate, and not too expensive! I can mount a double mod vise on each pallet and either have four separate locations or span the distance between them for holding long pieces. I recently machined some features in some 29" long pieces of aluminum square tubing, worked perfectly.

I am running two mod vises and a conventional vise in my default setup but finding more and more parts making their way into the mod vises as I get more comfortable with using them. I think pretty quick I’ll just be using them exclusively.

This will be short and sweet. These vises are awesome. It has allowed me to increase part density while gaining back multiple inches of Z height. Not to mention, my parts sit flatter in these then they ever did in my Tormach vises (which are relatively nice). Also no eternal chip mess like you have in the internals of a normal style vise. In summation; a game changer for me.

I've been using a basic drill vice on my machine since I purchased it and this is a massive step up in my work holding. The talon grips clamp down very well!
