Introducing the Gen3 Hobby Mod Vise - a versatile, low profile workholding and fixturing system for Saunders Machine Works 1/4" and M6 Fixture Plates! Our two-piece vise design allows for clamping parts of any size while maintaining a much lower profile than standard machine vises.

Product Specs:

  • Machined from 6061 aluminum
  • Built-in 1.00" [25.4mm] parallels for use with jaw inserts (smooth jaw inserts included) or SMW Castle Grips.
  • Alignment pin bores in the fixed-side vise base, eliminating the need to tram the vise when installed on an SMW fixture plate and used with 1/4" or M6 fixturing pins. These pins and corresponding bores on the vise allow the fixed-side base to repeatably locate and tram the jaw position.
  • Smooth Jaw Inserts and alignment pins are now included with Gen3 vises (over $30 in savings compared to purchasing parts separately for Gen2!)
  • Uses tapered M12 clamping bolts to apply up to 3,200 lbf [14 kN] of clamping force (on par with traditional screw-style 4" machine vises)
  • 0.20" [5mm] minimum clamping width when using built-in parallels

Purchase the smw hobby vice to complement my existing workholding methods. Its now become my go to method. Im using a home made pallet with a much modified printnc based router for alloys and some steels. Delivery was very quick and painless, despite living in Australia. The quality and fit of the mod vice makes me happy i brought a quality product instead if a “knock off” copy. Thanks to the team at SMW! Gary C

Great tool and great company! I had an issue where my machine's plate was slightly different than the plate Saunders had on file and had originally shipped to me (I had an early version of a machine) and they worked with me to get the plate corrected and shipped out in record time. Would highly recommend this company, wonderful people to work with!

SMW mod vise works great on my Carvera Ait with SMW fixture plate. Can accommodate pretty large pieces of stock (for my little machine) and is easy to use. Would definitely recommend.

Can be a bit cumbersome, but for how compact and how well it holds parts, the hobby vise is still 5 stars. No parts thrown out, after around a dozen parts. I'm super happy that I was able to get the extra parts to make mine a dual station. I was broke, but needed a vise. I had a 3D printed one that I was using, but it wasn't very square. So I bought the single station a month or so back, then just bought everything to make it dual. Much easier setup this way. If they bring it back, I suggest it for a smaller mill, like my Milo 1.5. I was sad when they stopped selling the serrated jaws, right when I went to order a second set. But the castle grips do seem to git r done. They're much lower too. Which helps have clearance, without having to cut from taller stock. The X drawn on my one jaw, was because it was higher on one side. Turns out, the jaw was warped. SMW was kind enough to send me 4 castle grips, an a pair of smooth jaws for free. Luckily I was able to bend the serrated jaw back.

Great vises awsome customer support. Only suggestion is to offer anodizing becuase it comes into contact with different materials and coolants that can eat away or stain.

This is my second modvice. First one is on a Bantam desktop mill. This is a shot of my Milo 1.5 (based on Linuxcnc/Mesa/Gecko control) doing first chips as a simple facing cut.

Love the vises! I've been running them with some quite heavy loads (mostly brass and aluminium though) and they haven't slipped once. I really like that the countersunk indexing holes allow for extremely repeatable stock positioning if one of the jaws is static, so I am able to switch to different size stock without updating my origin basically ever. My main annoyance with these vises is that while the fixture table fasteners are M6, the rest of the fasteners seem to use imperial units. Now I had to buy a set of imperial Allen keys just for these vises, and I never use them for anything else. I would have loved for the M6 version to use metric bolts throughout.

The Hobby Mod Vise are perfect for machines with limited Z height like my 3040ZDQ. While other vise systems are very tall and require large T-slots or a threaded fixture plate, these work with the default T-slots and leave plenty of room in the Z Axis for stock and tools. I have only used them with the Talon Grips but so far I've had no issues, I am amazed with the clamping force on such a small area!

Very happy with my mod vice. Can’t imagine running my CNC with any other setup. Customer service was amazing as well.

At this point I have not had a chance to really put them through their paces, however the build quality is awesome and the few small jobs I have used them for I am really impressed. So glad I bought two of them.

Finally, a low-profile piece of equipment that actually works. I’ve tried various other types of things, but this time I got it right. I’m thinking about getting a plate as well to use alongside this unit; I’m very satisfied. Many thanks from Portugal. Nelson Martins

I haven’t really had a chance to use it do to being busy but I have just ordered a sub plate and plan to put to good use. The design and quality of the vise is very nice and I should add the support of the company is beyond excellent.

They work great! I love the transparency via STEP files and other resources to adapt to exactly what I need.

Modular Vise System (Hobby - Gen3)

Well-made design and holds parts strong during high-speed marching. Also, the low profile gives me more travel for bigger objects.

Typical Saunders very high quality and finish but the problem is it will not fit on the Saunders fixture plate (even with the 1/4" fittings) or my Tormach 440 plate. Email to Saunders asking what or whose plate to use was not answered.

Modular Vise System (Hobby - Gen3)

Store owner replied: Hi Richard! We responded on 4/08 just before 4PM to see which 1/4" plate you might have (the Tormach 440 fixture plate requires our 1/2" version of the vise). I just sent you an email via my direct email just in case our support portal response got caught in spam - sorry about that!
